I was intrigued with Stephanie’s thoughts and description for the installation. Her wording and imagery, of ‘a retreat’ to get away from the extremely busy lives we lead, or dealing with “a space where time slowed down,” was very close to some of my own thoughts towards the art of composition. So, I decided to createsomething that suggested melodic content, but was more “atmospheric” like the introductory sections in the music of other cultures and thus create a mood of tranquility. To follow her other ideas closely which are based on different densities of light through the use of dual layers of material, I have not only created ‘events’ of music that are executed by the interactive viewer, but the ability for the viewer to unexpectedly modify the timbre of the sounds involved.
